No One Is a No One

If you have been following Nisser Tales, you may have seen the phrase “No one is a no one.”
It appears with the Nisser Tales logo and has become part of the heart of this little world.
But if you have read the books, you may have noticed something curious: the phrase does not actually appear anywhere in the first five books of the Lights Saga.
So why is it the Nisser Tales motto?
What does it mean?
To explain that, I would like to introduce you to Lille Skygge.
In Norwegian, skygge (SHYG-geh) means shadow. And Lille Skygge lives up to his name. He is a timid little nisse who prefers the quiet edges of things. He keeps to the shadows, where he is less likely to be noticed. Stepping forward does not come easily to him.
And yet Skygge is the Keeper of Wonder.
There is something important in that.
Skygge represents the part of all of us that sometimes wonders whether we are enough. The part that is afraid to step forward. The part that looks at everyone else and thinks they are somehow brighter, braver, more talented, more important, or more deserving of being noticed.
But that little voice is wrong.
No one is ever a no one.
And if anyone ever makes you feel that way, do not believe them.
Every person carries qualities that make them uniquely themselves. Some of those qualities are easy to see. Others are quieter. They may be found in the way someone cares for another person, in the questions they ask, in the things they notice, in the courage it takes to keep trying, or in a gift they may not even recognize in themselves yet.
You can see that throughout the human characters of Nisser Tales.
There is Anne, with her kindness and her heart for the forest.
There is Aksel, with his natural gift for music.
There is Pål, steadfast and determined to see a task through.
There is Tonje, whose guidance and care for her brother help him find his way.
There is Finn, determined to discover the path that belongs to him.
And there is Mette, with her questioning mind and her desire to understand the things she cannot easily explain.
None of them are the same.
None of them need to be.
Anne does not need to stop caring so deeply for the forest. Aksel should never quiet his violin simply because others may not hear the music the way he does. Pål’s steadfastness helps him keep moving forward, while Tonje’s guidance reminds him that he does not have to find every answer alone—and each has something to offer the other. Finn does not need to have already found his path. And Mette does not need to stop asking questions.
And Skygge does not need to become the loudest nisse in the forest.
His shyness does not make him less worthy of being seen.
His quiet nature does not make his gift any smaller.
The Keeper of Wonder does not have to become someone else in order to matter.
He only has to learn that being Skygge was always enough.
That is what “No one is a no one” means to Nisser Tales.
You do not have to prove that you are extraordinary before you have worth. You do not have to be the loudest voice, the bravest person, the most talented, or the one standing in the center of the room.
You matter because you are you.
And the nisser believe this about you, too.
No one is a no one. And that means you are special.
