Vaktel
Vaktel is seldom noticed arriving.
One moment the kitchen is quiet save for the crackle of the stove and the soft clink of Bestemor Runa’s teacup. The next, Vaktel is simply there—as though she had always been part of the room.
Vaktel is a member of the Amber Council and the Keeper of All That Is Seen. Calm, observant, and steady, Vaktel notices the things others overlook. A glance exchanged too quickly. A hurt feeling hidden behind a smile. Footsteps lingering outside the barn door long after everyone else has gone inside.
Nothing escapes her for long.
Pål and Tonje often hear Bestemor Runa speaking softly while working in the kitchen, carrying on conversations that seem meant for empty air. Only later do they begin to understand the truth:
Vaktel had been there all along.
She rarely announces herself. She does not need to. Her presence settles naturally into a room like lamplight against old wood—quiet, familiar, unwavering.
Though gentle in spirit, Vaktel carries a watchfulness that makes the Amber Council feel safe. She keeps careful eyes on Pål and Tonje, especially during moments when emotions run high or silence grows too heavy. And when the children attempt to hide something from the council, Vaktel often reminds them with the faintest knowing smile:
“I see more than you think.”
Yet her watchfulness is never cruel. She does not observe in order to judge, but to understand. To notice when comfort is needed before anyone asks for it. To recognize when something precious is beginning to dim.
Like many nisser of the Amber Council, Vaktel seems tied to the rhythms of the farmhouse itself. The glow of the stove. The creak of floorboards at night. The feeling that a home is quietly awake even while the world sleeps.
To learn from Vaktel is to understand that being truly seen can be its own kind of warmth. That care is often quiet. That love sometimes reveals itself not through grand gestures, but through simply noticing.
If a chair creaks softly though no one seemed to sit there…
If someone understands more than you ever spoke aloud…
If a room feels watchful, steady, and safe without reason…
That will be Vaktel.
